Folks, it seems like just yesterday when the 2013 Volvo XC90 rolled into our showroom for us here at Volvo of Burlingame to fawn over and test drive. Sure, any day's a good day when a new or used Volvo appears in the dealership, as far as SUV's go, we've always been pretty partial to what the XC90 has brought to the table. 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, a 3.2-liter I-6 engine that gets 240 HP, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive - trust us, it's a good drive.

But with the new year comes new strategies, and in an effort to place a greater emphasis on what Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson calls "safety, elegant design and user-friendly functionality,"1 it looks like big things are in store for the XC90.

While specifics are still slim, word has it that the XC90's new architecture will be derived from the next generation of S60, S80, V70, and XC60 models. And since the said models are all slated to be revamped by 2014, it shouldn't be long before things get underway for the XC90.

Although if you were looking forward to a Volvo lineup filled with five- and six-cylinder powertrains, it's probably best that you hear it from us; unfortunately, those two engine options are being dropped from all future models. However, there is a silver lining of sorts, as the XC90 will continue stay a seven-passenger vehicle with its trusty four-cylinder engine in tow. Not only that, but the new XC90 looks to remain the flagship vehicle for the future of the brand.

Once again: some mighty big things on the horizon for some of your favorite Volvo models. With that being said, we'll keep you posted on all the latest over at our blog, and before all these cars become a thing of the past, come on down and get a base of comparison at 900 Peninsula Ave. in Burlingame, CA 94010. After all, these four- and five-cylinder screamers won't be around for long.
